SRI LANKA WINS SAF SOCCER BRONZE

Sri Lankan Football team was rather unlucky as they were unable to enter the Final to face India at the 9th SAF Games Soccer Championship held in Islamabad recently. After beating Bhutan by 3-2 in a tie breaker, they played against Pakistan on 3rd April 2004 in the Semi Final, where they missed two golden opportunities in the deciding tie breaker.

However the Sri Lankan team showed their might in this semi final by holding Pakistan to a 1-1 draw in their own soil and narrowly missing a win that would have taken them to the finals. Still they were successful in securing the Bronze Medal for Sri Lanka even after losing the tie breaker by 6-5 with Pakistan. A simple welcoming ceromony was held at the Football House where the FFSL top officials paid their tributes to the team for their efforts and the acheivement.

SAF GAMES RESULTS
First round Sri Lanka beat Nepal 1/0, Sri Lanka beat Bhutan 1/0
Semi final lost to Pakistan 5/6 on penalties (full time score 1/1)
Third place batch Beat Bhutan 4/2 on penalties (full time score 0/0)

Sri Lanka Won The Bronze Medal

Pakistan emerged champs by beating India 1/0 in the final.
