Battle for soccer supremacy hots up
26 October 2004

The top ranked teams in the Kit Premier League Soccer championship Ratnam SC and Negombo Youth SC failed to pose a threat to leaders Blue Star SC last weekend. Though the Kalutara team did not have a game their lead could not be matched by any other team.

But Saunders SC who were on top in the first round could not maintain their supremacy in the round two and have dropped to fourth position.

Meanwhile Negombo Youth SC and Ratnam SC who were behind placed below Pettah Club Saunders SC and Kalutara Blue Star SC came up strongly in round two to push back Saunders to the present position. The difference between these teams is the number of matches.

Saunders have SC far completed only 19 game but whereas the other three teams in front are with more match results under their belt. Blue Star SC who are top has collected 51 points their 21 games.

Last weekend the Negombo teams Jupiters SC and Negombo Youth SC game at Kadolkele ground was stopped with 12 minutes before time.

According to an FFSL official the match gone in favour of NYSC at one stage and later when Jupiters equalised the crowds have invaded the ground on many occasions.

Referee Priyanga Pieris had failed to control the situation and he had stopped the game with the scorecard reading one-all said the official.

The official further added that this was the first occasion that a match had to be called off early on this ground. Earlier five Kit Premier League games have completed any problem.

He said that according to Negombo Youth official the hosts Jupiters have not provided necessary security for the game and as the match should be awarded to them.

According to the same official Jupiters SC put the blame on Negombo supporters and request a replay. He said that a final decision cannot be made until an inquiry is held by the Tournament Committee.

If the match goes in favour of NYSC they are sure to come to the second position. Negombo Youth is due to meet Air Force this weekend while the leaders face Matara SC.

Here Blue Star SC favoured and can still maintain the top slot for a another week.

Meanwhile a win for NYSC will not be sufficient to oust leaders and to out do the second placed Ratnam SC. Ratnam SC too will be engaged in lowly placed Navy SC which could bring them three points which assures them this position for a another week.

A victory for Saunders and a draw for Negombo Club would put them an equal terms with 46 points the third position.
