Women’s football taking a giant step in Sri Lanka

Women’s football is certainly taking a boom in Sri Lanka. Trying hard to establish and select their first National Women’s squad, the women’s football committee of Sri Lanka has convinced the Education Ministry to include girl’s football in schools. In addition, a development programme has been organized for U12 girls.
Speaking at the finals of the All Island Women’s Competition comprising of sixteen participating teams, Chairperson of Women’s Football Committee, Ms. Olivia Gamage said, “I’m very pleased to note the remarkable improvement of women’s football. We have already got the approval from the Education Ministry and now, women’s football is included in the programme for physical education in schools. So, I expect many more girls to join.”
“We have also initiated a development programme where 50 schools with U12 girls have been ear-marked. We hope with this, we can meet the international and Asian challenge by the Year 2010,” she added.
In the recently concluded finals of the All Island Women’s Competition, the Sri Lanka Police team beat their army counter-part but not before a tense penalty shoot-out. During normal time, both teams had their chances but could not find their way to goal.
In the penalty shoot-out, Police held their nerves to claim a 5-4 victory.
The finals was witnessed by the former director of physical education of the Ministry of Education who is also the Chairperson of Women’s Football Committee, Mrs. Olivia Gamage.
