The National Football Training Centre at Baddegana was opened by Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi today. The Secretary General of World Football governing body (FIFA) Dr. Urs Linsi and President of the Asian Football Confederation Mohamed Bin Hammam were the guests who represented their regions.
Dr. Urs Linsi addressed the press briefing held soon after the opening ceremony along with AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam al Abdulla.
Dr Linsi when asked whether this organisation is satisfied with the projects launched by FFSL through funds made available, he, without any hesitation, replied 'yes'.
The finances were used in the proper way that is the reason, why we see such a nice location today. Our organisation's auditors are highly satisfied with the using of funds in the proper manner. This is something that will consider when it comes for the next project", he said.
Mohamed Bin Hammam, President AFC said, I have visited Sri Lanka on many occasions. This is a special occasion for me'. Today I see the good work done by local body in promoting the game of soccer in Sri Lanka. This kind of improvement really helps them to further their development projects. You are sure to receive more funding through FIFA's goal projects, he said. This, I say because of your association and game played on the field have a step forward.
He further added when considering projects to be granted by the world governing body and the regional governing body consider the performances on the field. To have better performance the administrators too have to play their part well. These two have gone together in Sri Lanka. Now I saw the Lankan soccerites perform well during the past few months. This shows that at present everything is in order, said Mr. Hammam.
Deputy Minister speaking on the occasion said 'Government is keen in promoting sports. Though cricket has picked up the momentum in Sri Lanka, Football too is played by a majority of the people. During the past there was a downward trend but it has reached a new status. This is mainly due to the development programmes undertaken by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.
FFSL has taken many steps in this regard which has produced good results. The Asian Football Confederation led by its officials has given a good picture of our country and that is why we are here at this occasion to celebrate those. This new project is ample testimony to prove the successes of FFSL. We, Sri Lankans should thank the FIFA for their generosity.
A large distinguished gathering was present to witness the day's proceedings and a display by the young soccerites who performed their basics on the ground. Representatives from all parts of the country were present to withness the occation.
