FFSL has been very active in its various regions assisting victims of the tragedy which happened on 26 December 2004. Among the efforts so far done are the setting up of a relief centre and the donation of equipment, including footballs as well as household equipment.

Sampath Bandara 'Best Goalie'

Sri Lanka's under-19 goal keeper Sampath Bandara was adjudged as the Best Goal Keeper at the Asian Junior Football Championship concluded on Wednesday 7th July, 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Sri Lanka won their first two games against hosts Malaysia one goal to nil and in the second game they defeated Brunei two goals to nil.

The next two games saw Lankans go down to strongest teams in the tournament China and Indonesia one goal to nil.

India which was scheduled to play Sri Lanka in their fifth game did not compete in the tournament. R. M. U. Mahindapala Director Youth Development Programme FFSL said that this young pool has shown tremendous potential and he is confident that they can bring in good results in the future.

They were trained by Raja Chandrasiri a Sri Lanka goal keeper and of Benedictine fame.
