The defending champions of the Kit Premier league Ratnam sports club retained the championship title for a further period when they outplayed Saunders SC the glamour boys of Pettah by two goals to one at the Sugathadasa stadium under lights yesterday.
Saunders SC who entered the field as favourites with a better record than their opponents did not produce the soccer that was expected from them during the first session of play.
Though the Ratnam SC were to play minus their star players in yesterday’s game took all the chances and the two leading players skipper Rawmy Mohideen and Chathura Maduranga appeared on the field. But they did not go all out and played a cool game. This resulted in both sides failing to display good soccer to their fans.
The game dragged on this low pace for almost 40 minutes.
It took a different turn in the next minute when a Pradeep Perera after dribbling through two opponents and with a fine kick from 25 meters found the net to put the Kotahena team in front.
But the referee found fault with the goal scorer Pradeep when took off his jersey in jubilation and pulled out the yellow card on him. The teams returned to the pavilion with the Kotahena lads in front 1-0.
On returning for the second half once again it was Ratnam SC who were in the attack with Saunders players trying their best to find the equaliser. All their attempts were thwarted by Ratnam SC’s custodian.
The battle went on for another 42 minutes with both teams failing to penetrate the opponents to find the net.
It was at this stage that Rawmy the skipper sent in a good ball from the left to E. B. Channa who made no mistake with the kick further extend the lead 2-0.
Just few minutes away from the long whistle Rizwan Shaib tackled Isuru Perera in the danger are and referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Saunders SC.
Sudara Maduranga who took the kick made no mistake and reduced the lead 2-1. That was the only bright moment for losers from Pettah.
Sailors win Seg. B title final
Sri Lanka Navy who maintained an unblemished record right throughout the tourney in Segment proved that they are the best when they won against Java Lane in the final in this segment.
