FFSL has been very active in its various regions assisting victims of the tragedy which happened on 26 December 2004. Among the efforts so far done are the setting up of a relief centre and the donation of equipment, including footballs as well as household equipment.

ST. LUCIA'S MANNAR WINS DIV II SOCCER FINALS

The finals of the Division II Soccer Championship organized & conducted by the FFSL was held at the Mannar Stadium on 20th March. St Lucia Sports Club of Pallimunai, Mannar played against Golden Star Sports Club, Kandy.

St Lucia's team from Vanni District has so far won five out of seven games and had a goal aggregate of 21. Their best performance was against Al-Rathah where they registered 5-0.

On the other hand Golden Sports Club from Kandy had registered six victories and had a goal aggregate of 30 against their opponents. Their best win was 9 goals against Ever Shine Sports Club.

Both teams showed equal prowess, so much so that none could score a goal during the first half. It was St Lucia's Hilary Perera who scored their first goal in the 15th minute . Ten minutes later Anthony Figurado , skipper of the team scored 2 more goals to put the team way ahead of the opponents. Even with the imminent victory they kept on ,which resulted in Hilary Perers scoring yet another goal for his team. The match ended with 4-0 which was a rare win in the recent history for a team from North to win an all island sports championship .

A crowd of nearly 10,000 people witnessed the match where Bishop of Mannar Dr. Rayappu Joseph , Vice President AFC Mr. Manilal Fernando , President FFSL DIG Gamini Randeni and GA Mannar Mr. V. Visuvalingam graced the occasion.The winners received Rs. 100,000/= and the Champion Trophy while the runners up were awarded Rs.50,000/= It was a treat indeed to the spectators and Football lovers of the area who seemed to enjoy every bit of the match. Mr. K.I Dissanayake refereed the match.
